Vulcan’s Forge – Velázquez
Oil on canvas reproduction of Vulcan’s Forge, a work Velázquez painted in Rome on his own initiative in 1630. He sold it to the king to decorate the palace of the retreat, it is in the Prado Museum since 1819.
The play depicts Apollo informing Vulcan about his wife’s adultery with the god Mars.
This subject had been dealt with many times by other artists, but never in such an original way.
