Description
The Toilet of Venus – Velázquez
Oil on canvas reproduction of the The Toilet of Venus, a work Velázquez painted in 1648. It is located in the National Gallery in London. The painting depicts the goddess Venus lying sensually on a bed and Cupid holding a mirror where Venus looks at herself.
This is the only surviving example of a female nude by Velázquez. The pictorial theme was rare in Spanish Baroque because of the disapproval of the Church.
The original is 122 x 177 cm in size and is available in several sizes in Copiamuseo.
