The Kiss – Gustav Klimt
Oil on canvas, gold and silver leaf and tin embossed with Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss.
Klimt painted The Kiss between 1907 and 1908. The paradox is that Klimt painted his most famous work in one of the lowest artistic moments. This situation can be explained by the fact that his nudity was classified as pornography, and in his day this seriously damaged his reputation.
The use of gold and silver is the product of a trip he made to Italy, where he could see Byzantine mosaics that had this gold decoration.
