William Trost Richards
William Trost Richards was an American painter born in Philadelphia in 1833. He studied with German painter Paul Weber and his work was first seen in an exhibition organized by landscape painter Albert Bierstadt in 1858. While studying he worked as a designer of metal ornaments.
He was a member of the “National Academy of Design” and met the “Hudson River School”, which was a group of landscape painters influenced by romanticism.
He was also a member of the “Association for the Advancement of Truth in Art”, the so-called pre-Raphaelites, a brotherhood of painters, writers and art critics.
He traveled and worked a lot in Europe but his last years painted in the United States. He became a member of the American Watercolor Association, and his last works were some beautiful marinas painted with this technique.
He died in 1905 in Newport, Rhode Island.
