El arte en tu casa
Ramón Casas y Carbó was a Spanish painter born in Barcelona on 4 January 1866. Specialist in portraits, caricaturist, poster designer and graphic designer.
When he was very young he left school to train as a painter in the studio of Juan Vicens Cots. In Paris he studied with Carolus-Duran and Henri Gervex. He was co-founder of the magazine L’Avenç, of which he was correspondent in Paris, of course while he was painting.
In the beginning he painted costumbrist scenes both in interiors and exteriors of Paris influenced by the impressionist movement. On his return to Barcelona he painted contemporary scenes such as processions, dances, demonstrations, and of course the bulls, since he was an amateur.
Casas and other artists of the time opened in Barcelona a bar called Els Quatre Gats, which they used as a meeting point of the artistic life of the time, even founded a publication called the bar, which later became Pel i Ploma. At this time he began the twelve paintings for the Liceo de Barcelona, where he began to make contact with the society of Barcelona, which he portrayed with great mastery.
He died in his native Barcelona in 1932.
