Paul Cézanne

Paul Cezanne was a post-impressionist painter born in 1839. He was considered by many avant-garde painters of the time to be the father of modern painting.

In his youth he moved to Paris to enter art school, but was rejected and returned to Aix en Provence, his home town, to work in his father’s bank. He enrolled in the municipal drawing school and later decided to devote himself fully to painting and his father gave him a monthly allowance so that he could work. He paints until he reaches impressionism influenced by other artists of the time.

He holds exhibitions but is not successful, which produces a break with Paris and impressionism to seek his style. One of his best-known series is Players of Cards. Picasso said of him, that he was their only teacher.

Cézanne died of pneumonia in 1906.
