Max Kurzweil

Max Kurzweil was an Austrian painter and engraver born in Bisenz in 1867 and co-founder of the so-called “Vienna Secession” group, an association of 19 Austrian artists led by Gustav Klimt who abandon the old standards and influenced by French impressionism, begin a new journey, modernism.

He won the Villa Romana prize, was a professor in an art academy for women, but above all he was a renowned editor and illustrator of the secessionist magazine “Ver Sacrum”. As a result of his continuous predisposition to depression, he committed suicide together with his lover in Vienna in 1916. For this reason his legacy was not very large, but he is considered one of the most important artists of the Viennese secessionist movement.

His best-known work is “Woman in Yellow Dress”.
