Juan Gris

Spanish painter born in Madrid in 1887, and together with Picasso and Georges Braque, representative of cubism. They even called him the third man of cubism.

At the beginning he was an illustrator and studied at the “Escuela de Artes y Manufacturas” in Madrid. In 1906 he moved to Paris where he met Picasso and Braque. He continued to create illustrations for some Parisian publications, although he left them in favour of painting.

His first cubist works date from 1910. While the artists of the time who played cubism were evolving, Juan Gris remained faithful to this style all his life. Juan Gris had little success in Spain during his lifetime, it was from 1980, when certain museums and collectors became interested in his work.

He died in Boulogne-sur-Seine (France) in 1927.
