The Surrender of Breda by Diego Rodriguez de Silva and Velázquez

Oil reproduction on canvas of “The Surrender of Breda”. Baroque work painted by Velázquez around 1635.

The painting was commissioned for the decoration of the Hall of Kingdoms of the Buen Retiro Palace. They wanted to decorate it with paintings of war victories during the reign of Felipe IV, and the most famous was the conquest of Breda.

The surrender of Breda, represents the delivery of the keys of the city by its governor Justino de Nassau to the general at the service of the Hispanic monarchy Ambrosio Spínola Doria.

Velázquez always declared himself proud of the creation of this work in which he put all his good work, for the importance of the historical moment it represented.

The work is housed in the “Museo del Prado” and measures 307.3 x 371.5 cm.
